Basis Poker Terminology
Here is a list of basic poker terminologies to help you better understand the game of poker.
Flop: The first 3community cards dealt by the dealer.
Turn: The 4th community card dealt by the dealer.
River: The 5th and final community card dealt by the dealer.
Hole cards: Are the cards that are dealt to the player
Community cards: The cards that are dealt to the center of the table that are shared by all players.
Bet: When a player places the first wager.
Call: When a player matches the bet of another player.
Raise: When a player makes a second higher bet after another players bet.
Re-raise or 3-Bet: When a player makes a third wager higher than the other two prior betters.
Fold: When a player throws away his hand without a bet or any additional betting.
Check: When a player passes the action to the next player without making a bet.
Check Behind: When a player checks right behind the other players check.
Royal Flush: When a player has Ten, Jack, Queen, King, Ace of the same suit.
Four of a kind or Quads: When a player has 4 cards of the same kind. eg; 4aces, 4 tens, etc.
Straight Flush: When a player has 5 suited cards in order. eg; 4,5,6,7,8 of spades.
Flush: When a player has a combination of 5 same suited cards. eg; 5 spades
Full House or Boat: When a player has both 3 of a kind and a pair of another kind
Hand Flop Set: When a player has 3 of a kind made up of a pair in their hand and a matching community card.
Flop two pairs: When a player matches both hole cards with two of the community cards.
Top two pair: When a player matches both of their hole cards with the two highest dealt community cards.
Bottom two pair: When a player matches both hole cards with the two lowest dealt community cards.
Overpair: When a player has a higher pocket pair then the highest dealt community cards.
Top pair: When a player hits the highest dealt community card.
Middle pair: When a player pairs the middle highest community card on the board.
Bottom pair: When a player pairs the lowest of the community cards on the board.
Flush draw: When a player has four same suited cards and a fifth card of that suit gives them a flush.
Open ended straight draw: When a player has 4 cards in numerical order and can catch a matching card on either end of the sequence giving them a straight.
Gutshot straight draw: When a player is missing one card in the middle that would complete a straight.
Overcards: When a players two hole cards are higher than the dealt community cards.
Backdoor draw: When a player needs help by hitting needed cards on both the turn and river.
Pocket Pair: When a player is dealt a completed pair.
Unraised pot: When no ones raises the bet before the flop.
Raised pot: When a player or players raise the bet before the flop.
Pre-flop: Everything that happens before the first 3 community cards are dealt.
Post-flop: Everything that happens after the first 3 community cards are dealt.
The nuts: When a player holds the strongest possible hand based on their hole and the community cards.
Bad beat: To have a player whose hand is a large underdog beat the heavily favored hand.
Connector: When a player holds two hole cards that are one apart in rank. eg; King, Queen, Seven, Eight.
Suited connector: Similar to a connector but in addition both cards of of the same suit.
Drawing dead: When a player is trying to make a hand that will not win even if he makes it.
Kicker: An unpaired card that is used to determine the better of two similar hands.
Outs: Cards you can hit that will make your hand win.
Rainbow: A flop that contains three different suits.
Runner runner: A hand that is made only by catching the needed cards on the turn and river.
Tilt: To play recklessly or wild.
AA: Pocket rockets.
AK: Big Slick
KK: Cowboys
QQ: Ladies
JJ: Jaybirds
TT: Dimes
99: German virgins
88: Snowmen
77: Hockey sticks
